“Annotating as Hunting: A Digital Annotated Edition of Sasha Sokolov's Between Dog and Wolf”

Frequently (and unfairly) called the “Russian Finnegans Wake,” Sasha Sokolov’s 1980 novel Between Dog and Wolf took 30 years to appear in English and remains a challenge for readers in any language. The Encyclopedia of the Dog offers a complete and freely accessible bilingual digital edition as well as multiple kinds of annotations to help readers grasp the text's various meanings, allusions, and layers. At this talk, project director José Vergara will describe the Encyclopedia’s creation, the collaborative process behind it, and future plans.

José Vergara is Assistant Professor of Russian on the Myra T. Cooley Lectureship at Bryn Mawr College. He is the author of All Future Plunges to the Past: James Joyce in Russian Literature (NIUP/Cornell UP, 2021) and co-editor of Reimagining Nabokov: Pedagogies for the 21st Century (Amherst College P, 2022). His current research projects focus on contemporary Russian prison writing and representations of Chornobyl. His writing and interviews can be found in the Los Angeles Review of Books, Asymptote, Words without Borders, Music & Literature, and World Literature Today.
