How did gender, class, nation, and race clash and cross in the world of early modern fencing? What did wielding a sword mean to a Black man in sixteenth-century Spain? Can we overcome the hackneyed notion of the sword as a phallic symbol of power?

Come and find out! Professor Manuel Olmedo Gobante (University of Arkansas) will encourage us to reflect on how martial arts in general, and fencing in particular allowed early modern Spaniards to envision, forge, and fight for their identities.
