Location

Speaker(s): Vanessa P茅rez Rosario (Associate Professor of Puerto Rican and Latino Studies, Brooklyn College)

Please join us in welcoming by discussing her upcoming literary project! As Associate Professor of Puerto Rican and Latino Studies at Brooklyn College, CUNY, Professor P茅rez explores the overlapping Latinx histories of the United States and Caribbean. Having worked on topics ranging from Puerto Rican poet Julia de Burgos in her book, (UI Press, 2014), as well as the politics of transnational journalism, Professor P茅rez examines the ways Latinx migrant lives contribute to cultural spaces in the United States.

Her recent work illuminates the artistic changes that have emerged as a result of Puerto Rican migration to the continental United States. By writing her scholarship in English, Professor P茅rez has allowed English-speaking audiences further access to the Caribbean history that informs American culture, revealing the profound ways bilingual communities influence one another despite the presence of politicized borders. She also works in cultural criticism, having contributed reviews to publications such as the Hemispheric Institute鈥檚 journal emisf茅rica and interviewed artists such as Andrea Arroyo.

The workshop will be held on Thursday, October 24th from 12:00-1:30pm in Building 50, Room 51A. Lunch will be served. Please RSVP by writing to nalicia [at] stanford.edu (nalicia[at]stanford[dot]edu) before Tuesday, October 22 at 4pm.
