Join the next Comics: More Than Words Research Unit group talk titled, "Drawing Theory" with Nick Sousanis.

We are very excited to announce the last event of the spring quarter series on Comic Theory and the last event of the year for the Comics: More than Words Research Unit, supported by the Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages and kindly sponsored by the English and Art History Departments.

We will be hosting comics author and associate professor (San Francisco State University) Nick Sousanis, who will present on his experiences writing and drawing his doctoral dissertation entirely in comics form. Published by Harvard University Press as Unflattening, the work argues for the importance of visual thinking for teaching and learning in both its subject and its form and challenges the forms of learning traditionally found in academic settings. The talk will explore comics-making as knowledge-construction and how Sousanis approaches this in his teaching - and he鈥檒l lead attendees in a quick comics-making activity to put all comics as thinking into practice. Bring a pen or pencil, a sheet of paper, and a willingness to play!

Nick Sousanis is an Eisner-winning comics author and an associate professor in Humanities & Liberal Studies at San Francisco State University, where he runs an interdisciplinary Comics Studies program. He is the author of Unflattening, originally his doctoral dissertation, which he wrote and drew entirely in comics form. Published by Harvard University Press in 2015, Unflattening received the 2016 American Publishers Association Humanities award for Scholarly Excellence and the 2016 Lynd Ward prize for Best Graphic Novel. Sousanis鈥檚 comics have appeared in Nature, The Boston Globe, and Columbia Magazine.

The event will be in-person, and will take place in Pigott Hall, Room 252, on May 30, 2023 at 12pm. In preparation for the meeting, see an excerpt of Unflattening here:  and Nick's Entropy comic and how he made it here:
